Law Journal Competition Information

The Mississippi Law Journal accepts new members from the 2L class during the summer following their first year. All candidates for membership must have a 3.20 GPA and successfully complete a three-part competition that typically lasts two weeks. During the competition, students complete a publication quality case note, a Bluebook editing exercise, and a Mississippi case brief. The number of candidates selected for membership will vary.

The competition consists of the three assignments listed below. You must meet all of the corresponding deadlines unless you have a true emergency. Summer job conflicts, retreats, weddings, etc. will not serve as valid reasons for a missed assignment. For this reason, we encourage you to give your employers a heads up when the competition begins.

Briefserv Exercise
Starts Monday, May 27th at 8:00 AM (CST)
Ends Wednesday, May 29th at 2:00 PM (CST)
Bluebooking Exercise
Starts Thursday,  May 30th at 8:00 AM (CST)
Ends Monday,  June 3rd at 2:00 PM (CST)
Case Note Exercise
Starts Tuesday, June 4th at 8:00 AM (CST)
Ends Sunday, June 9th at 2:00 PM (CST)

The Competition TWEN page is now available for registration. You must register for this TWEN page because it is where you will turn in your competition assignments and ask questions. The Competition Guide that we have used in the past is available under the “Competition Information” tab. The Competition Guide is a pretty exhaustive manual and should be very helpful to you as you complete each stage of the competition. Please note, however, that Corban will be emailing all of you before each stage of the competition with additional guidance.

Anonymity During the Competition:

Pro Tip- Take a picture of your exam number before the end of finals, so that you will have your number on hand when the competition starts. Every year there are issues because people forget or lose their exam numbers. Don’t let this be you! All of your assignments MUST be turned in anonymously with only your spring 2019 exam numbers as identifying information. When the competition begins, you will receive detailed instructions for how to ensure that the assignments you submit to us are scrubbed of any identifying information. Until the competition begins however, you can ask us questions freely and without ensuring anonymity, so ask away!

GPA Requirement:

You must have at least a  3.2 gpa when grades are released on May 24th in order to tryout for MLJ membership.

If you have any questions, please email us at and be on the lookout for more information from us. We look forward to hearing from you and helping you through this challenging and rewarding competition process!
